INTRODUCTION

Smoking is a practice where a substance, most commonly tobacco, is burned and the smoke tasted or inhaled. This is primarily practised as a route of administration for recreational drug use, as combustion releases the active substances in drugs such as nicotine and makes them available for absorption through the lungs.


FACTORS OF SMOKING

v The influence of peer smoking

v The influence of parents smoking

v Self-concept (adolescent girls who had negative feelings about their body also had lower self-esteem)

v Parent connectedness (adolescent is unable to meet their need for affirmation within the family)




Smoking Statistics – 2000 (KL & Selangor)

Overall current smokers: 30.9%

Malay 33.4%

Chinese 27.4%

Indian 30.3%

15 – 17 yrs 14.7%

18 – 19 yrs 18.9%

20 – 24 yrs 44%

25 – 29 yrs 33.4%

30 – 39 yrs 33.7%

40 – 59 yrs 28.9%

FUTURE PREDICTION

The number of smokers will increase yearly


Adult smokers :

Male smokers 49% 30%

Female smokers 4% 10%

Overall adult prev. 25% 20%

Number of adult smokers 3.6 m 4.6 m

v The higher graph is 20-24 years old

:This is because they have been influenced by friends.

v The lower graph is 15-17 years old

:because they are still young and do not too exposed to the smoking habit.

:a lack of exposed about the smoking affects.



As a conclusion:

v The only way to get any leverage with teenagers is to return fire with fire, taking on the various influences that make smoking seem attractive.

v In other words, find new ways to make smoking look ridiculous.
